Top 5 Winter Skin Myths – Debunked!
Myth 1: It’s cold so I don’t need to wear an SPF
Busted: It may be brisk outside, but that’s no excuse to forgo the sunscreen and leave your skin susceptible to sun damage. You may not burn like you would if you were lay under beating sun at Bondi for 8 hours but even on a very cloudy day, UV radiation from the sun reaches us earthlings. Australians are particularly at risk - with a significant hole in the ozone layer proving to be even more problematic for our skin. Use a moisturiser with an spf every single day and if your make up contains spf - even better! Don’t be fooled by foundations and powders that contain spf - you’ll still need both to ensure your skin is fully protected.
Myth 2: I need to exfoliate more with a coarse scrub to remove dead skin cells
Busted: Scrubbing your face vigorously may feel like it’s doing good - but when you scrub away at your face you’re removing some of the protective oils and barriers. For those with oily skin skin this can lead to an overproduction of oil as your pores try to replace what was stripped away. Dry skin beauties aren’t in the clear either - over scrubbing can lead to sensitivity, dryness, flakiness and redness. Try using a chemical exfoliant twice a week ONLY, over an abrasive scrub. Chemical exfoliants smooth the skin’s surface with gentle acids that eat away at dead skin cells - without sloughing away your skin’s protective layer!
Myth 3: I need a thick cream in winter - it’s more hydrating
Busted: Heavier moisturisers are commonly misconceived as being more beneficial for dry winter skin. However, piling on your favourite buttery night cream can overload your skin with unnecessary perfumes, fillers and preservatives which could lead to irritation and blocked pores. Look for a rich serum with active ingredients that delivers moisture to the dermal layers of the skin - without sitting on top of the skin. If you need an extra boost to your evening ritual, mix your serum with an antioxidant rich moisturiser - ideal for hydrating and plumping skin.
Myth 4: Winter exacerbates skin conditions - time to slow down on advanced skin treatments
Busted: Winter is the perfect time to invest in your skin with technologically advanced IPL skin treatments. IPL as well as laser should not be exposed to the sun whatsoever. Pre-IPL skin can’t be tanned at all (yes, even that glowing spray tan you were banking on). Repair summer ravaged skin with IPL skin rejuvenation treatments that will conquer fine lines, age spots, pigmentation and sun spots! Just remember, apply an anti-inflammatory cream to relieve, restore, and repair skin immediately following IPL treatments.
Myth 5: I have oily skin - no moisturiser for me thanks!
Busted: This is an exceptionally common misconception for oily skinned beauties. Dry, cold climates affect all skin types - even oily skins. A specifically formulated, high quality moisturiser will assist in regulating a healthy oil flow whilst nourishing and hydrating the skin. Allow a minimum of 2 weeks for skin’s moisture balance to even out. Oily skin should use a light formulation so as to not clog pores whereas combination and dry skins can invest in a richer moisturiser for an added hydration boost.
